ASH WEDNESDAY

This day marks the beginning of our pilgrimage during the season of Lent in which, through self-denial and a concerted spiritual effort, we seek to draw closer to Christ.  In order to mark this day properly Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence.  According to Church law, Catholics older than the age of 14 are asked to abstain from meat.  In addition, those between the ages of 18 and 59, not including pregnant or nursing mothers or those who are sick, should eat only one full meal.  Smaller amounts of food (a small snack) may be eaten in the morning and either at lunchtime or dinner, depending on when you eat your full meal.

Ash Wednesday (5th March) Mass Times:

10 am                        St Thomas Aquinas

11 am and 7.30 pm  All Saints

8.00 pm  St Alban’s, Winslow

RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Catholics in England and Wales can receive the Sacred Host either in the hands or directly on the tongue.  It is the responsibility of the priest to ensure that the Host has been consumed by the communicant.  If you receive the Host in your hands say “Amen” out loud and then place the Host directly in your mouth while in front of the priest:  please do not walk away with the Host.  Intinction, that is, dipping the Host in the Chalice is not permitted.  It is customary to bow your head as a sign of reverence before receiving the Host and the Chalice.  When receiving the Precious Blood from the Chalice, the communicant must say “Amen” out loud before drinking from the cup.  Above all, we receive our Lord’s Body and Blood prayerfully and carefully.  It is the high point of our day and we owe it the dignity and respect it rightfully deserves.

CHILDREN’s LITURGY

If your child has made their 3rd birthday and is confident enough to join the group without the need of a parent being present, then they are very welcome to join the Children’s Liturgy during Mass.  Parents are encouraged to stay to help their child ‘settle in’ for the first two occasions but after that your child should be able to be left under the supervision of our Parish Catechists.  Children who are preparing for First Holy Communion need to stay for the whole Mass in Church as this is an important part of their preparation.

NOISE AND DISRUPTION DURING MASS

We aim and hope to be a ‘child friendly’ parish where children are especially welcome.  Yet as a courtesy to others, please do not feel embarrassed about having to take your child outside or into the meeting room for a few minutes, if they are particularly noisy.

Thank you for your understanding.

USE OF THE TOILET DURING MASS (All Saints Church) The toilet in All Saints Church should not be frequented during Mass unless it is an emergency.  The constant traffic to and from the toilet is very disruptive to the liturgy particularly during the most solemn and important parts of the Mass.  If you do need to use the toilet, during Mass, please make your way there quietly and at an appropriate moment.  Thank You.
