LENT begins. A special season given to us each year to help us to celebrate Easter when it comes. Lent is a time for getting to grips with our faith, a time for prayer, fasting and almsgiving (giving to charity). You may wish to join one of the extra activities put on for Lent such as the Wednesday Sharing Group or the Discussion Group at Heelands (see below). Whatever you choose to do for Lent, I wish you well with your endeavours.

LINDA LAWLESS is organising a Sharing Group for Lent called ‘Prayer and Share’. Wednesday 10-11 am at St Thomas Aquinas Church: 29th February, 7th and 14th March. Week 1: ‘This is my Beloved Son, Listen to Him’ Mark 9:7. All welcome.

Maggie Thomas, aged 47, late of Toddington. News of Maggie’s death has brought sadness throughout the parish and beyond. Her Requiem Mass is to be Monday, 9.30 am at St Mary’s Church, 82 West Street, Dunstable, LU6 1NY. The family hope that many Bletchley parishioners will attend; if you are able to offer a lift, please let us know. Please remember Maggie’s husband Dave, her parents, her six children and large extended family in your prayers at this sad time.

CONFIRMATION. Feedback tells us that our 45 candidates and their leaders spent a fabulous two days at Alton Castle last weekend. Some youngsters said that the centre reminded them of “Hogwarts” and how beautiful it looked in the snow! Staff at Alton Castle have told me of how well-behaved our youngsters (and leaders!) were, a credit to our parish and also of how well-informed they were about Confirmation etc. – a credit to their parents, catechists and teachers over the years.

“SNOW USE WORRYING”. Please don’t rush to the Confessional box because you were unable to get to Mass last Sunday. It is only a sin to miss Sunday Mass if it is due to our own fault (laziness etc). Snow is beyond our control, so no sin is involved. God does not want us to slip over and risk broken bones! “Bravo” to those who did make it; for once people had no problem finding a seat!

WORKAID is an organization who send many items, including farming tools, etc., to Africa. They are currently making an Appeal for unwanted carpentry tools (in any condition). OUR LEGION OF MARY PRAESIDIUM have had a ‘cabinet reshuffle’ of their officers. Dorothy Caballero is the new President, Sylvia Palmer Vice-President, Mary Taylor Secretary and Deborah d’Almeida Treasurer. The group meet every Tuesday, 7.30 pm for Rosary and devotions. During the week they visit parishioners at home or in hospitals or care homes. They are a happy bunch and would welcome anyone who would like to join them.

‘BON VOYAGE’ to Fr Joseph who headed off to India at 5.45 a.m. on Thursday on his annual leave, combined with two weeks’ field research for his doctorate studies. He will visit his family and his colleagues from his M.S.F.S. Province. He returns to us on 14th March. We wish him a happy time.

MEANWHILE, Fr Michael has been granted three months leave of absence by Bishop Peter to take a sabbatical. This will commence on 23rd April. Fr Joseph will (capably) cover all priestly duties in Bletchley, supported by Deacon Noel, the parish team and the good parishioners. Fr Mark Elvins will cover Winslow.

CANON STAN CONDON was given a tremendous ‘send-off’ at his Requiem Mass at Woburn Sands on Monday. Over 30 priests and 3 deacons joined Bishop Peter for the Mass. Such a huge crowd attended that many had to hear Mass from the car park outside via loudspeaker. A fitting tribute for a much-loved pastor. Requiescat in Pace.

BEATA CZYZYNSKA would like to thank all parishioners who attended the funeral Mass of her husband Wieslaw and for their good wishes.

TODAY IS EDUCATION SUNDAY. The day we give thanks for all that is achieved through Catholic education. This parish is particularly blessed by having two fine Catholic Primary Schools; Bishop Parker and St Thomas Aquinas, as well as St Paul’s Catholic Secondary School for our older youngsters. We give thanks today for all students, staff, governors, parents and all who contribute to the success of our schools.

NEXT SUNDAY Marriage Care will speak at all Masses. A Retiring Collection will be taken for their work.

Henry Macgreggo, late of Cockerrell Grove, Shenley Lodge, whose funeral is on Friday, 1 pm at St Thomas Aquinas Church.
Canon Stan Condon sadly died on Monday following an illness bravely borne. A fine priest and great friend of Bletchley Parish. When I was appointed to our parish, nearly 10 years ago, Canon Stan was our Dean and gave me a warm welcome, describing Bletchley Parish as “a bit of a handful”!! He acted as a great support to me ever since, always obliging and offering help. Later, when we were reduced to one priest here, Canon Stan literally kept us going by supplying Mass at our busiest times, notably Palm Sunday, Easter Day and Christmas. Hence he became a well-known figure, much-loved by many of our parishioners who will miss his kindly manner, his devotion to his priesthood and his wonderful sense of humour. Canon Stan loved coming to us, he loved the spirit of the parish, saying nowhere else did he see such crowds.
God Bless You, Stan, we will miss you.
At St Mary’s, Woburn Sands, there will be a Vigil Mass on Sunday 29th January at 6.30 pm and Requiem Mass at 11 am on Monday 30th followed by Canon Stan’s burial in the cemetery in the plot next to his mother.

CATHOLIC PARLIAMENTARY AND PUBLIC POLICY INTERNSHIPS.
For the last nine years the Catholic Bishops’ Conference has organised Parliamentary and Public Policy Internships for recently graduated Catholics. This year we are looking to offer 8 internships. 5 interns will be placed with Christian MPs at Westminster; 2 in Public Policy with CAFOD and CARITAS Social Action Networks and 1 in a media internships at Archbishop’s House, Westminster.
All internships will run from September 2012 – July 2013 and include accommodation and subsistence allowances.

THE SENIOR’s CHRISTMAS PARTY is to take place next Saturday, 21st January at West Bletchley Community Centre. The doors open at 1.15 pm and dinner will be served from 2 pm. WEDDING COUPLES’ MEETING. We have twelve weddings ‘booked in’ so far for 2012. Would all these couples please attend an important meeting on Monday 30th January, 8 – 9 pm at St Thomas Aquinas Meeting Room.

Furthermore, any Bletchley Parish couple planning to marry in a church outside of Bletchley Parish and want us to complete the paperwork, please attend too.

ST PAUL’s SCHOOL are seeking two governors. Anyone interested needs to be a practising Catholic and a parent of a child at the school. Governors do an important job in keeping our schools Catholic and we are very grateful to them all for all they do. If you are interested, please see Fr Michael.
Incidentally, the school has given me the names of sixty-two children from our parish who wish to be admitted in September. Of the sixty-two I was able to give references for thirty-seven, based on the evidence in their diary which they were having signed throughout last year. Of course, I hope that the school are able to accommodate all 62, but if places are limited, the 37 are to be given priority, in keeping with the school’s published admissions criteria.
PS: Children in the current school year 5 need to be having their diary signed, after Mass, throughout 2012 in support of their admission to St Paul’s in September 2013.

Christmas Offering. Fr Joseph and Fr Michael say a big “Thank you” for the Christmas day collection which amounted to £2,403 each. Your generosity knows no bounds and we are very grateful.

Webs Wonders. Have you checked out our upbeat web-site recently? Go to www.bletchleyparish.co.uk and you will be impressed. On Christmas Eve no fewer than 297 people visited the site, (mostly to find out the time of Midnight Mass!?!). This shows how important web-sites and such things are nowadays, and it reduced BT’s profits too, as our phone never usually stops ringing on Christmas Eve, but this year, just a few enquiries by phone.

Looking Back. Another busy year in the parish draws to a close. Fifty funerals, twelve weddings here plus more abroad and eighty baptisms. Weekly Mass attendance up again to 1,230. New rules about no meat on Fridays for Catholics. New translation of the Mass to come to terms with. Fr Mark Elvins continues his ministry in Winslow until the Summer, which takes a little pressure off the Bletchley priests for a few months at least.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who helps in any way toward the running of our parish. It takes a lot of work and goodwill to keep a parish of this size “on the road” and so many people give of their time, talents and treasure, mostly behind the scenes. I thank you all. May God bless you for all you do.

Congratulations to the twelve altar servers who were presented with their bronze medals (not “medicals”) during Mass on St Stephen’s Day. Also, to Bernard Guina who received his silver medal for ten years of service at God’s altar, now exercised as MC.

Diaries Begin Today. For school admissions in September 2013, please begin using your 2012 diary today. After Mass, please present it for signature to: a governor or staff member of Bishop Parker School or St Thomas Aquinas School, to a welcomer, MC, children’s liturgy leader or to one of the parish team. Does your child require a diary? “Yes”: if they are in the current school year 5 (for St Paul’s School); “Yes” if they are to begin Reception Class in September 2013 (ie they are currently in the year prior to Nursery). Please do not think your child is too young for a diary or miss this important notice. Collect your diary from the sacristy. Your child’s school place is at stake; if in doubt, please ask.

There was a time when all monasteries observed a strict rule of silence. In one monastery a monk was allowed to say only two words every five years, and those would be to the abbot. After his first five years of silence one monk said to the abbot: “Food cold”.
At the end of five more years he said: “Bed hard”. Finally, after his fifteenth year in the monastery he said: “I quit!”
“And I am not surprised, my son” replied the abbot, “you’ve done nothing but complain since you got here!”
